180 Year's of Adair Arms Hotel
A proud Ballymena landmark since 1846
The Adair Arms Hotel is celebrating nearly 180 years of continuous service to Ballymena, marking a remarkable milestone for one of Northern Ireland’s oldest hotels and a cornerstone of the town’s history.
Founded in 1846 by Sir Robert Adair and designed by renowned architect Charles Lanyon, the Adair Arms has stood through some of the most significant periods in Ballymena’s development. From the height of the linen industry and the arrival of the railway, through two World Wars and periods of major social change, the hotel has remained a constant presence at the centre of town life.

In the post-war years, as Ballymena expanded and modernised, the Adair Arms evolved alongside it. The hotel adapted to advances in technology and infrastructure, from improved transport links and utilities to modern communications and digital systems, ensuring it continued to meet the changing needs of guests while preserving its historic character.
For generations, the Adair Arms has been woven into the social and civic fabric of Ballymena. It served as a key meeting place for local leaders including linen mill owners, farmers, town planners, and legal professionals, with its proximity to the courthouse making it a familiar and trusted setting for members of the legal profession.
Today, the Adair Arms continues to balance its proud heritage with a modern role. Alongside serving the local community, the hotel regularly provides accommodation to national and international guests visiting Ballymena for sporting events, business, and tourism, helping to promote the town well beyond the local area.

The hotel has also played an important role during times of need. In recent years, it has supported local residents during blackout storms by opening its doors to provide warmth, device charging, and a safe, welcoming space for those affected.
Commenting on the milestone, the management team said: “For the management team, the Adair Arms is more than just a job. We are extremely proud of the business, its long history, and — above all — the staff who have helped shape it over the generations. Their dedication, local knowledge, and commitment to Ballymena are what truly define the Adair Arms.”
The Adair Arms has remained a significant local employer since its opening, with many staff drawn from the surrounding area. This strong local connection ensures the hotel continues to reflect the values, insight, and spirit of the community it serves.

In addition, the venue regularly supports and hosts a wide range of charitable, educational, and cultural events, reinforcing its long-standing partnerships across Ballymena and beyond.
As it approaches this historic anniversary, the Adair Arms Hotel looks to the future with the same commitment that has guided it for nearly two centuries — remaining an inclusive, welcoming, and community-focused venue at the heart of Ballymena.

As part of its anniversary celebrations, we have launched “180 Years of Memories”, a community-driven campaign inviting the public to help preserve and share that living history.
The hotel is calling on past guests and local families to submit:
